Public Sculpture Committee with Bluewater Power Distribution Corporation, MIG Engineering and Sequoia Landscape and Maintenance

The long-term, capital-intensive process of developing a public, outdoor sculpture garden was initiated within the artsVest program. Sarnia is blessed with a waterfront space that is arguably underutilized as a public resource. One prominent community leader had seen these types of gardens in other cities (e.g., Guelph, Ontario) and recognized the potential for such a cultural amenity in Sarnia – seeing a particular fit with the waterfront. While this idea had percolated for several years, it was the advent of artsVest that brought it from the idea stage to concrete action. Key people were solicited to participate on a committee which participated in fund raising and accessing essential in-kind contributions including engineering consulting services and building materials. Plans are in place to move forward with a permanent home, and then to develop a strategy for issuing artist competitions, house visiting sculpture works, and collaborate with existing artistic and physical resources in the city.

Forest-Lambton Museum Society Inc. with Tourism Sarnia-Lambton

The Forest-Lambton Museum Society partnered with Tourism Sarnia-Lambton to highlight cultural sites in Lambton County. This collaboration recognized the significance of cultural tourism and drew a substantial sponsorship from the not-for-profit tourism bureau in town. The project resulted in a visual map of museum offerings in the region with an appealing one-page presentation. The goal was to jointly distribute 200,000 of these within the project time frame. In addition to helping visitors gain access to important cultural amenities by consolidating key information into an easy-to-use map (e.g., museums in the area), the tourism group benefited from associated brand and signage recognition as well as leadership participation in a number of prominent events and media attention. This collaboration of Lambton County museums, galleries and theatres was the first for the area.

The Art Assembly with Haines Printing and The Investors Group

The Art Assembly partnered with Haines Printing and The Investors Group to present An Event Apart, a three-day event scheduled for this upcoming November which will showcase local artists' work. All proceeds will benefit the health and well-being of the community by going to the The Sarnia Lambton Taskforce on Healthcare Worker Recruitment, an organization dedicated to improving the availability and quality of healthcare workers in Lambton County. Artists, businesses and the larger community of Sarnia are all stakeholders in this initiative, living and operating in an area that The Minister of Health and Long Term Care assesses as being underserviced by 23 general practitioners. Individuals will be drawn to the event for both the original art and its cause.

Forest Community Theatre with Wallis Pontiac Buick GMC and Klondyke Trailer Park Inc.

This innovative project enabled the theatre company to hire six emerging professional performers to be The Main Street Players for the summer and perform throughout the urban and rural areas. The car dealer provided the use of a van which prominently displayed the dealer's name wherever the performances were held. The trailer park acted as one of the venues, hosting periodic performances through the summer. The investment helped enable tourism development and downtown revitalization for Sarnia by providing lively summer outdoor stage entertainment and encouraging foot traffic in the downtown core.

Artwalk with Arcturus Realty Corporation and First Monday

Artwalk is an annual event taking place in Sarnia, Ontario, and highlights the visual and performing arts from music, dance to stiltwalking! Over 60 exhibits are put on display in areas of the city, including a portion of Christina Street (main downtown artery) and a number of uninhabited real estate locations. Prominent is the motivation towards revitalization of the city core. This is accomplished by animating the downtown, making it lively and interesting, while also inhabiting otherwise empty spaces for the duration of the event.

Potter's Guild with Steeves & Rozema Enterprises Ltd.

This project involved purchasing potter's equipment (a wheel and a slab roller) to be used by the 28 local guild members for their collective benefit. The partner was a senior's home and part of the exchange included having experienced potters actually bring their craft into the senior's home for demonstrations. This served as a creative means for community outreach for this group and a project around which the guild could converge, both in the acquisition of the equipment and the presentations to the donor groups.

Gallery Lambton – Art for All

Gallery Lambton offers art classes for children that help build an appreciation and understanding of the visual arts as well encouraging higher learning skills. Programs are offered to children aged six to 13. Fees for art classes although reasonable, do make our programs inaccessible to some families. The sponsorship program Art for All covered fees for families who could not afford them. Through the Art for All program, Gallery Lambton has placed children in art classes, working in cooperation with the St. Clair Child & Youth Services; Big Sisters of Sarnia Lambton; the Community Girl's Home; Children's Aid Society and the YMCA of Sarnia-Lambton and Ontario Works.
